Abstract
Objectives: To investigate whether serum levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) correlate with leiomyoma-related symptoms and weights of leiomyoma-bearing uteri in patients with uterine leiomyoma. Methods: Twenty-four women included who were scheduled to undergo hysterectomy due to uterine leiomyoma in University-based Hospital. Serum VEGF-A levels were measured using a commercially available enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit according to the manufacturer\¡¯s instruction. Weights of leiomyoma-bearing uteri were recorded postoperatively. Results: There were no significant differences in VEGF-A levels between the patients with or without menorrhagia (219.3¡¾193.8 vs. 306.9¡¾304.1 pg/ml), and between the patients with or without dysmenorrhea (111.8¡¾39.1 vs. 268.0¡¾243.3 pg/ml). Serum VEGF-A levels did not correlate with weights of leiomyoma-bearing uteri in patients with uterine leiomyoma (r=-0.091, P=0.671). Conclusion: Serum VEGF levels may be not correlated with the leiomyoma-related symptoms, or weights of leiomyoma-bearing uteri. Serum VEGF-A levels may not be a clinical marker of uterine leiomyoma.
